Streamwood High School Tennis Courts

School District U-46

OBJECTIVE

The existing tennis courts had a deteriorated surface with many large cracks. Fence posts were heaving out of the ground, and groundwater was seeping from under the courts onto the adjacent softball field. The School District wanted to upgrade the condition of the courts for the safety of the users and to be comparable to the other high schools in the district. Construction needed to be completed during summer while school was out of session.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

School District U-46 contracted with Hampton, Lenzini, and Renwick, Inc. (HLR) to prepare project plans, specifications, and bid documents and to perform construction observation and coordination for the tennis court reconstruction.

The plans consisted of full-depth removal and replacement of all eight courts at Streamwood High School. The replacement was necessary to eliminate safety concerns caused by the severely cracked surface of the tennis courts. The plans included installing a new fence around the courts and underdrains to collect groundwater, which had been causing flooding on the adjacent softball field. Additionally, a tennis court lighting system was added to enable the facility's use for practice and tournaments in the evening.

Engineering services encompassed a full topographic survey, plan and contract document preparation, engineer’s estimates of probable cost, coordination with a geotechnical consultant, submittals to School District U-46 and the Village of Streamwood, and construction observation. Construction was completed in the summer of 2020.

The coordination efforts involved the Village of Streamwood regarding City Ordinances and drainage during the design stage. Furthermore, close coordination with the Contractor and School District U-46 was maintained throughout the construction to ensure the project was executed according to the plans and specifications within the required schedule.
