Big Timber Road at Madeline Lane, Ph. II, III
City of Elgin
OBJECTIVE
This project addressed increasing congestion and safety concerns at the intersection of Big Timber Road and Madeline Lane due to growing industrial traffic. The effort included evaluating the need for a traffic signal through MUTCD warrant analysis and designing improvements that meet KDOT standards while accommodating heavy truck movements.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
HLR completed a traffic signal warrant analysis, capacity evaluations, and an Intersection Design Study to support installation of a new traffic signal. The project included widened curb returns to accommodate semi-truck turning movements, reducing off-tracking and improving safety. The signal design incorporates flashing yellow arrows to enhance left-turn operations. A fiber optic interconnect was also installed to link adjacent signals and integrate with KDOT’s system, improving traffic coordination and preparing the corridor for future improvements. The completed intersection reduces congestion and enhances safety for both commuter and commercial traffic.
