SERVING TOGETHER AT THE NORTHERN ILLINOIS FOOD BANK
For many struggling families, the ability to put a holiday meal on the table is out of reach. Since 1999, the Northern Illinois Food Bank has been providing Holiday Meal Boxes containing a traditional meal of turkey and all the trimmings for a family of eight; their goal in 2019 is to provide 30,000 meal boxes.
To help them meet this goal, a team of volunteers from Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick, Inc. (HLR) and their family members spent an evening at the food bank sorting sweet potatoes and assembling them into five-pound bags. In total, they bagged 2,955 pounds of sweet potatoes, which is equivalent to 2,462 meals. The sweet potatoes will be included in the Holiday Meal Boxes, along with stuffing, potatoes, gravy, fruit, dessert…and of course, a turkey. HLR was honored to have the opportunity to give back to our community and help the food bank with its mission to bring joy and a hearty meal to hungry families this holiday season.
