Wastewater Plant Headworks
The City of Carmi constructed a new wastewater treatment plant in the late 1980’s. The treatment plant operated well but had a serious design flaw that caused premature equipment failure.
Our solution proposed the installation of new equipment and located it outside of where gases naturally vented into the atmosphere. These improvements utilized higher efficiency screening and grit removal equipment. As a result, the overall operation of the treatment plant improved, and the life of other plant components was extended.
The construction logistics of these improvements were critical. The site was confined with other utilities, and the plant could only be shut down for a four-hour period. The contractor had to exactly match and connect to a 30” pipe at each end outside of the building. There was also no start-up or trial period, which required the new equipment to work immediately. Our team utilized their wastewater knowledge to expertly lead this project to a successful delivery.
