Briggs Street over Spring Creek
Will County needed to replace a structurally-deficient bridge at a high-traffic County Highway location. The design needed to minimize in-stream impacts, complement existing scour protection, and be constructed quickly.
Our team designed a new two-span steel wide flange beam bridge with asymmetrical span lengths to relocate the proposed substructure elements away from scour-prone areas of the stream channel. The structural foundations consist of steel piling driven to bedrock to withstand the anticipated scour. An enlarged bridge waterway opening reduced channel velocities and backwater at the proposed structure. The north embankment was left undisturbed to ensure stability. The existing steel sheet piling will remain along the banks to be incorporated into the final design to control the channel migration, saving construction costs, improving water quality, and reducing wetland impacts.
