Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick, Inc. is proud to announce the 2018 winners of Trig Star!
Trig Star is an annual high school competition where students vie to answer the most trigonometric problems correctly in the fastest amount of time. Approximately one hundred thirty-five students recently competed at Rockford East High School, with junior Miguel Melo Bustos taking top honors with a perfect score! The students who placed 2nd – 5th from East also earned cash prizes – congratulations Patrick Banka, Madeline Grobe, Muno Alshoja, and Taylor Byrd.
At Roosevelt High School, also in Rockford, senior Angelica Brady-Briggs came in first place among the eight students who competed.
Trig Star is an opportunity for high school students to learn the use and practical application of trigonometry as used by land surveyors. It’s an opportunity to educate students about the field and encourage them to explore surveying as a potential career choice. Mr. Stephen Brooks, a teacher from Roosevelt who helped coach Angelica in this year’s competition, said that they are developing an elective course that would cover many of the skills needed for the Trig Star test with the hopes that it will introduce the idea of surveying as a profession to students early in their high school careers.
HLR is honored to sponsor this event since 2010, and is so proud of Miguel, Angelica, and all the students who participated as well as the teachers who coached and encouraged them!
