Traffic Signal Operations Management and Engineering
Challenge
To preserve safe and optimal traffic flow efficiently through the City of Elgin’s traffic signal network by monitoring and directing traffic signal maintenance activities.
HLR addresses equipment damage and failure in a timely manner, deciding to repair or replace equipment due to age and/or damage due to vehicle “knock downs” or construction activities.
Solution
Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick, Inc. (HLR) is assisting the City of Elgin with the management of their traffic signals. This includes checking the traffic signal controller programmed databases (auto-compare) once a week for unauthorized changes, detection problems and communication problems; performing quarterly field checks of all traffic signals and flashing beacons to ensure all contract traffic signal maintenance is being properly performed; and reviewing traffic signal vehicle clearance and pedestrian timings. The project also includes the coordination with the City’s Electrical Maintenance Contractor daily to address and resolve maintenance issues.
HLR investigates, resolves and responds to complaints that the City receives concerning traffic signal operations. HLR is also performing an inventory of traffic signal and lighting equipment, and developing and implementing optimized traffic signal timing plans for various time periods.
HLR assists the City in review and budget decision making for future traffic signal improvements.
Results
HLR continues to meet the challenges and assist the City in expanding and improving the traffic signal system network.
